Reiun-in is one of the complex of Toufuku temple in Rinzai school in Buddhism and said to be established in 1390. It is located east west of Kyoto and one of the complex of Toufuku-ji (東福寺).
Though the temple is not wel-known, the zen garden is very beautiful and worth visiting. The good thing for traveller is that not the temple rarely crowded.

Garden

They have two major garden. Both are zen garden.

Kusen Hakkai no niwa (九山八海の庭)

Zen garden

Kusen literally means nine mountains and Hakkai means eight oceans.
In the middle of the garden, there is a stone called Iaiseki, which represent Mount Meru. Mount Meru is considered to be the center of all the physical, metaphysical and spiritual universes in Buddhism.
The ground is covered with white gravel and that portrays mountain and ocean.

Gaun no niwa (臥雲の庭)

The ground is covered by white and white-brown gravel. River in gorge and clouds in mountain are portray by sands.

Both two garden is very simple garden, there is no colorful flowers or trees, however, the garden is definitely nice and worth visiting.

How to get there

From Kyoto station, take a bus line 26. It takes about 40 minutes to the bus stop. The bus stop to get off is Mimuro Higashi (Omuro Ninnaji).
From Sanjo Keihan station, one of major station in Kyoto, take a bus line 10 or 59, ita takes about 40 minutes to Mimuro Higashi (Omuro Ninnaji) bus stop.
Ninna-ji is very close to the bus stop and easy to find.
