Heian-jingu was built in 1895 to celebrate the transfer of the capital that took place 1, 100 years ago in 794.
After samurai period has finished in 1868, Japanese capital was transferred to Tokyo from Kyoto. Because of that, Kyoto’s power had been fallen off and many people left the city. However, local people has a potential. A movement to rebuild Kyoto had risen. Building a new shrine was one of the project for new Kyoto.
The shrine is 110 years old. Generally speaking, it is old, however it is categorised a “new shrine” in Kyoto since the city is very old.
Things to see
Shrine gate
The shrine gate is very big.
If you are lucky, you can see Japanese traditional wedding. Bride wearing Japanese traditional clothes, Kimono.
Garden
The garden is hill-and-pond style garden and the shrine is surrounded by the garden. The size is quite big – 33, 000m2. You can stroll in the garden.
Though it is in the city, the garden is quiet and peaceful.
Heian-jingu is known as a flower garden, though it is not so colorful like western garden, you can enjoy flowers in any season besides but winter.
In Spring – weeping cherries.
In early Summer – iris and blue flag. Over 3, 000 irys are planted in the garden.
Water lilies are beautiful, too – it is like Monet’s water lilies.
In Autumn – maples become crimson.
